A Growing Worldwide Tiny House Community

tiny house communityWhen we first decided to go tiny two years ago, although tiny house TV shows were popular, tiny house living wasn’t exactly mainstream… at least not where we lived. Although, unbeknownst to us, one of the main icons in the tiny house world, Macy Miller, lived right in Boise a few miles from us! (We didn’t learn about her until after we moved away. We also didn’t learn of her thriving Facebook group, Tiny House People, until just before we moved into our tiny home. Sure wish we’d known about it sooner!

But in the nearly two years we’ve been living tiny, we’ve come to realize that there is a burgeoning tiny house community all over the world. I’m not talking just tiny house villages. I’m talking a Tiny House Nation (not confined to the TV show of the same name) that supports and helps and celebrates each other. This tiny house community takes many forms.

Humidity in Tiny Houses

Let's talk about an important subject: humidity and moisture control in a tiny house. It's a real problem, potentially. You see, tiny houses tend to be very well-insulated. Many of them also run on gas or propane heat like ours does (we have gas). That combination, as well as the small space, often leads to moisture build-up inside. And that can lead to mold growth and other nasty things! And believe me, you don't want that!

Our Tiny Trailer

Happy Birthday, Harmony Haven!

Our tiny house was "born" on this day a year ago when our trailer (finally) arrived at Rocky Mountain Tiny Houses, and Jim started staining our exterior siding. And 10.5 weeks later, we officially adopted her as our forever home! So, we've been living tiny for nearly 10 months now... and are still just as excited about it as we were on day 1. It's been a perfect solution for us.

Almost Nine Months In… And Still Loving Living Tiny!

Harmony Haven in Summer
Harmony Haven in Summer

As we’ve gotten on with the business of living our lives, tiny style, I’ve not been writing in here quite as much, but I thought it was high time I posted an update, so here goes…

Big question we keep getting from family and friends who are still trying to wrap their heads around the fact that we made this huge change in our lives a little less than a year ago… How’s it working out?

One word… fabulously! 🙂

We honestly couldn’t be happier. Going tiny may not be right for everyone, but it has absolutely been the right choice for us! Having spent a lot of time planning out our space and trying to be realistic about how much we needed and what functionality we couldn’t live without, we have come to realize that we made the right decisions for the most part. I said it 3 months ago, and it’s still true.

We have now experienced our tiny house in all 4 seasons of the year. We moved in during early autumn and weathered a pretty mild winter for this region. Spring came early and has been beautiful and now we are into the heat of summer. Read more

Harmony Haven Update

Harmony Haven tiny house in Winter
Harmony Haven in Winter

Whoah! I haven’t posted here in almost 3 months! How time does fly! I thought it might be the right moment for an update. First thing I want to make clear… we are still LOVING living tiny!

This has absolutely been the right choice for us. We are still finding that we have all the space we need in our very functional tiny home. The design still resonates with us as much today as it did a year ago when we first came up with it. It just works for us.

There is nothing we truly don’t like about our house and very little we would have done differently, given the chance. As i mentioned in my last post, I’m not really thrilled with the curtains over our cubbies, but we still haven’t fixed that.

Moisture, the bane of many tiny house owners, has become an issue during this long Colorado winter, especially in the bathroom. We’re learning to control it by leaving the window cracked, running the exhaust fan during and long after every shower and using some moisture absorbing crystals. A de-humidifier may be in our future, when money allows. Read more
